Background
John Lim, was born on December 23, 1935, in Yeoju, Korea. His father and uncle were farmers and also operated the only sawmill in the small town near Seoul. At age eight Lim became the first in his family to adopt Christianity. In 1950, John's father, was an early casualties of the Korean War.
He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in religion in February 1964 from the Seoul Theological College, Korea. Then John immigrated to the United States in 1966 as a graduate student at Western Evangelical Seminary, Portland Oregon, he earned a Masters of Divinity in 1970. In 1966, the Seminary awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
In 1988, after serving as President of the Korean Society of Oregon, John ran for the National President of the Federation of Korean Associations. Lim ran for the Republican nomination in 1990 for Oregon's gubernatorial race and receiving approximately 11 percent of the vote.
In 1998, Lim was the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate race and lost to Senator Ron Wyden 33.8 percent to Wyden's 61 percent of the total votes cast. John finished his two terms as a State Senator for eight years.
In January 2004, John Lim was elected by the Multnomah County Commissioners to temporarily fill the vacancy for the Senate District 25, the seat now filled by Laurie Monnes Anderson.
