John F. Street

John F. Street was sworn in as Philadelphia's 97th Mayor on January 3, 2000. He served on the city council from 1980 to 1998, representing the fifth district, and he was elected council president in 1992 and 1996.

Street grew up in poverty, without electricity or indoor plumbing. He worked his way through college, later earning a J.D. from Temple University Law School. He has worked as an English teacher and a lawyer. He and his wife Naomi have four children.
