John C. Danforth (R) is a former U.S. Senator from Missouri. He won his first public office in 1968, when he became Missouri's Attorney General at the age of 32. He was re-elected in 1972, then won an open Senate seat in 1976, and went on to serve three terms in the Senate. He served briefly as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, from July 1, 2004 to January 20, 2005.
Danforth strongly supported Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court, because Thomas had worked for him both in the Senate and the AG's office.
As a result of his older brother's death from ALS, he supports stem cell research, and he has appeared on TV ads supporting Missouri's 2006 Stem Cell research referendum.
Mr. Danforth is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. He and his wife Sally have five grown children.
