Talk:Jeff Gannon

From dKosopedia

(question from Lestatdelc) Why is this page linking to dKos diaries as one-off repositories instead of other dKopedia pages?

--MH in PA 17:55, 31 Jan 2005 (PST) Lestatdelc, this page was just started recently and the idea (I think) was to quickly capture all the great work going on over at dailyKos on this topic. As we build other dkosopedia pages, we should definitely link those in. I think we should keep the diary list somewhere in the entry though. (Usually I put relevant diaries at the end of the article, but this is a special case, I think - at least for now.) Sound ok?

--MH in PA 17:59, 31 Jan 2005 (PST) btw, Lestatdelc, thank you for jumping in and working on this - your edits are great - I will be taking a break for now and check back in a little while, so if you post again here I may not reply right away.

No prob. Will pitch is as I can. Have to head ot of the office and may do some more edits this evneing as time permits. Lestatdelc 18:14, 31 Jan 2005 (PST)
Will the links to the diaries remain valid indefinitely? If not (that is, if the diaries get moved or age off the system or whatever), then the important information from the diary should be moved into the article before it ceases to be available. Even if the links do continue to work, there's value in consolidating the information into one coherent text. A single article is more accessible to the reader and can be cut and pasted wherever the terms of the GFDL are met.
For the short term, I agree that it's better to note a link and make sure the information doesn't get buried in the flood of new material, even if the editor doesn't have time right now to incorporate it. As articles become more developed, however, it might give them a more professional appearance if diary links "waiting to be incorporated" were on the talk page rather than the article itself. Long-term, a link in an article to a diary should probably be reserved for instances where the diary has a level of detail that some readers might want but that wouldn't be appropriate for inclusion in the article. I pretty much agree. This is a fast moving story; there's apparently alot of folks at dKos that are comfortable putting good content into diaries but haven't made the move to 'pedia yet. I'm basically grabbing stuff and throwing it in a bucket so we don't lose it. My time is pretty limited - work + school + (imagine it!) other commitments; so to go through and extract the good information from the diaries and write it up coherently, we'll need a few more hands, or at least someone with a serious amount of time.
Also, I'm not sure how long the diary links remain valid. I've found some pretty old stuff in my searches on dKos. It's ideal to move the substantive content into the 'pedia, but I like linking in the diaries so that readers who want to go more in depth can see the discussion that occurred at the time of the news. I guess that's a personal style thing of mine; I'm open to what the dkosopedia 'gurus' want to do. --MH in PA 16:03, 1 Feb 2005 (PST)
