Hui Malama O Makua

Hui Malama O Makua, a group of concerned organizations and individuals concerned about the United States Army's use of the Makua Valley as a training area where troops from the 25th Infantry Division conducts live fire training for combat. Makua Valley is located on the dry leeward south coast of the island of Oahu in the state of [Hawaii]. Makua Valley is said to be a sacred place to native Hawaiians, the mythic birthplace of the Hawaiian people.
Frequent brushfires that imperil the fragile native ecosystem and the potential destruction of Hawaiian artifacts in the valley are the Hui's concerns. Hui Malama O Makua, also decries the military amphibious exercises done on the beach fronting the valley.
The Hui has criticized the State of Hawai'i for leasing the lands to the military in 1964, $1.00 for 65 years, until the year 2029.
Frenchy De Soto a well-known Hawaiian activist and former trustee of the the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is one of the leaders and spokespersons for the Hui.
