The Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA), is under the state of Hawaii's Department of Human Services and manages federal and state public housing programs, including Section 8 and senior housing.
On July 1, 2006 the Hawaii Public Housing Authority came into being after Governor Linda Lingle enacted Act 196 which split the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii into two agencies: Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) and the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC).
It is hoped that HPHA will be more efficient in turning over the backlog of vacant housing units into occupied units and keep up with the maintenance of the state's public housing presently backlogged.
