Talk:Haiti Earthquake Relief

From dKosopedia

I added a template box (which appears as a yellow box in the upper right-hand corner) that can help people to track diaries. I see that you've been doing this manually in Haiti Earthquake Relief#Other news and diaries

If it's important for people to keep track of the diaries that have been written on the subject, it would probably be better to keep the information in a chart with at least three columns: date, diarist, and URL. (If the diaries are all different and you need to indicate more information, you may want to add a "comments" or "description" column.) For an example of a chart that I've written to keep track of progressive radio stations, see List of progressive radio stations. To see a sample of the basic code used to create it, see Talk:List of progressive radio stations#Sample table. If you're interested, you can copy it to a page and modify it as desired, or ask me and I'll do it for you.

But first you should ask the question whether people (you or others) will actually need to retrieve this information in a way that requires zeroing in on a diary written at a particular time or by a particular person. If not, and if the diaries are all being tagged consistently, then the template box may be enough for your purposes. You may not even need the list of diaries that you've been keeping.

Agreed - this is much better. The list is now over 45 diaries, and it's gotten to be unwieldy to manage a link to each diary. I've been talking it over with Swampus, and for the most part the tags look to be mostly consistent. He tried a specific tag, but that one isn't being used consistently. I'll be tinkering with this over on my user page, to sort out any specific issues before moving it over here. Thanks.

If you want, I could write a Perl script that would extract the title, date, and user name from the list you have, and use them to populate a table, as long as you show me a few rows of the table you want. Let me know if you're interested.

I moved format changes and additional links from my user page to the main page. The format changes have been discussed on the relief diary mailing list, and the general opinion was that this works slightly better. The main changes are to break the Secular NGO's down better by function (added subheaders) and shifted some text around. A few new links were added from the diaries.
