Background
Greg Macpherson is a third-generation Oregonian. Born in Corvallis in 1950, he grew up on a dairy farm in rural Linn County. He attended a two-room country schoolhouse until the sixth grade.
Greg's father and grandfather both served in the Legislature and were respected for working across party lines, a tradition of bipartisan cooperation he carries on. His grandfather, Hector Macpherson, Sr., served as a State Representative in the 1920's and 1930's. His father, Hector Macpherson, Jr., was a State Senator in the 1970's who teamed up with Governor Tom McCall to write Oregon's pioneering statewide land-use planning law.
Greg left home to attend Harvard University and Georgetown Law School. He returned to Oregon where he has spent the last twenty-five years working as an employee benefits attorney with the firm, Stoel Rives LLP.
Greg is married to Tory Macpherson and is the father of adult twins, Mary and Alex. He believes strongly in the value of community and public service. Greg has served as a Sunday school teacher at his Presbyterian Church, as well as a youth soccer and basketball coach. He has volunteered with the Stoel Rives Legal Aid Clinic, providing legal assistance to people with limited means. Greg’s other civic experience includes serving as the chair of the Multnomah County Planning Commission and as the vice president of the City Club of Portland and as chair of several City Club committees studying public policy issues.
