The vote totals for Rep. Gutknecht's past elections are interesting but certainly do not tell the whole story. First, it is worth noting that other than Mary Reider, Gutknecht has not faced a well-financed opponent. I have hope for Tim Walz because he is organizing early and receiving some national media attention due to his status as a veteran of the War on Terrorism. If Walz can raise the money, Gutknecht has a serious problem on his hands.

Second, 2006 is shaping up to be the perfect political storm for Democrats and especially for candidates who can speak from experience on the War on Terrorism. With Bush's popularity in the toilet and Americans unhappy with the War in Iraq, Gutknecht will have to do even more to distance himself from his party. If Walz can succeed in tying him to the Republican machinery, we've got ourselves a new congressman.
