Gary Safarik has lost his reelection bid to represent Council district 5 on the Hawaii County Council in 2006 to . Safarik held the Council job for three two-year terms. Council district 5 includes Lower Puna (Hawaiian Paradise Park, Orchidland, Ainaloa, Pahoa Village, Hawaiian Beaches & Shores, Nanawale, Leilani, Kapoho, Kalapana, Opihikao).
Safarik was born and raised on the windward Oahu. He has an Associates degree in Criminal Justice from UH Hawaii and a Bachelor degree in Business Management from Chaminade University. Safarik is a communications business owner and has lived for more than 24 years in Puna. He is a former Honolulu police officer.
