Cost of Convention
- Should we charge? Yes.
- How much?
- Poll of dKos members about cost
- fabooj - We should try to keep it below $150pp with a sliding scale for us broke folks and students.
Discounts
- Should volunteers get a discount? Yes.
- fabooj - Students should definitely get discounts. Major sponsors should get 4 tix free and maybe even offer discounts to early registrants.
Scholarships
- fabooj - It would be great if we could get sponsors to offer scholarships (tix) to attendees.
Revenue
If the target attendence is 500 +/- 100 dKossers plus speakers, exhibitors, media and others is 40 tables about the right number? Entities that would want tables:
- businesses selling to political campaigns
- non-profits
- party organizations
- candidates
- booksellers & other for-profit media
- indy media and non-profit media
To sweeten the deal for non-profits, party organizations and candidates the Convention could provide a list of postal addresses of participants to be mailed to no more than three times.
How much should tables sell for? Does anybody besides indy media get a discount? How much?
I'm going to add some "lessons-learned" from a professional conference that I was recently a committee chair for.
First order of business (financially) ought to be development of a budget. If you've got committee chairs, they can be responsible for development of their sections. This effort will drive lots of the planning (folks will have to seriously research to costs of all of it) and will help you determine your per person cost. A formal budget helps to keep everyone in line as you move forward.
If anyone is interested, I can provide you with a sample budget to get you started. Cassandra m

Things to think about:
- I think we could get a lot more than 500 people. Dailykos gets 238,031 visitors a day. If we cross advertise with other progressive groups, I was estimating 1000+ in attendence. We could get more. Alot of people are looking for ways to defeat this administration, they are looking for a way to act and we are offering something more substantial than a protest. We will get people outside the Koscommunity.
- Kos charges between $700 - $2500 a week for ads. This gives us an idea of what people are willing to spend to have our eyeballs see a 150 X 200 pixel blog ad. He gets more traffic, but we'll be offering highly targeted traffic with the opportuntity for face time. Maybe we could offer substantial discounts on tables for speakers. Or ask for gifts in kind with other organizations. The majority of Kos users have income $60-$90,000 range and the second highest range was $90-$120,000. These sound like great demographics. Heck! Speakers and other organizations are going to get thier names listed in the diaries, and kospedia countless times between now and the Convention. It will not be a losing proposition for them.
- We should also sell advertising in our program.
- We should get registrants email addresses in advance and as we send convention updates include ad spots for a book or whatever. This is another option for up front cash.
- Our goal should be to make a profit on this event and have it go to the Kos Dozen or something. This really reinforces the fact that the money is going to a GREAT cause. People should be willing to spend more if the goal is clearly illustrated to them.
