Dick Dearden (D) is serving his second term in the Iowa Senate. He represents Senate District 34, which includes Des Moines.
Iowa State Senator Dick Dearden is Co-Chair of the Business and Labor Relations Committee. He serves on the Ethics, Transportation, and Natural Resources and Environment Committees and is also a member of the Transportation Budget Subcommittee.
Senator Dearden is a member of AMVETS, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees retirees, Izaak Walton League, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation and the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). He is a six-year veteran of the National Guard. He is a former chairman of the Polk County Democratic Party.
Senator Dearden recently retired as a job developer for the Fifth Judicial District. He graduated from Des Moines East High School.
He and his wife, Sharon, are Des Moines natives and have been married over 40 years. They have two sons, David and Mark, one daughter, Pamela, and five grandchildren.
