Dante Carpenter
From dKosopedia
Dante Carpenter, a member of the Democratic Party, is noted for being mayor of Hawaii County from 1984 to 1988.
As Hawaii County's mayor, Carpenter facilitated the building of resort developments like the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa, and pushed for the promotion of new enterprises in high-tech and agriculture.
Carpenter's defeat in the 1988 general election to a political unknown, Bernard K. Akana stunned Hawaii politics.
In 2000, Gov. Benjamin J. Cayetano appointed Carpenter to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' Board of Trustees. Carpenter was one of the appointments that were made to replace trustees who resigned after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled their elections unconstitutional due to a Hawaiian-only voting restriction. In 2002, Carpenter won an election to a seat on the Board of Trustees in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
In January 2010, Carpenter was elected interim chairman of the Hawaii Democratic Party following Brian Schatz's resignation.
