Dan Rather
From dKosopedia
Daniel Irvin Rather was born in Wharton, Texas. In 1953, he received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Sam Houston State Teachers College. Rather joined CBS News as a correspondent in 1962. He was the first journalist to report that President John F. Kennedy had died of wounds received from an assassin. As a result of the attention on his coverage, in 1964 he was promoted to White House Correspondent. In 1981, he replaced Walter Cronkite as anchor of the CBS Evening News.
Rather is notorious for his odd analogies and comments during news broadcasts, called Ratherisms. Some notable ones from the 2000 election are:
- "His chances are slim right now and if he doesn't carry Florida, slim will have left town."
- "I think you would likelier see a hippopotamus run through this room than see George Bush appoint Ralph Nader to the Cabinet."
- "This will show you how tight it is — it's spandex tight."
- "It's cardiac-arrest time in this presidential campaign."
