Huh? Every edit-page links here, and yet there is no policy. I guess no one has ever wondered what the copyright policy was. I guess I'll write an outline of what I think should be here.
It is also troubling to me that the link on the bottom of every article to http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/GNU_FDL brings up a page not found. For example:
- This page has been accessed 2 times. This page was last modified 03:49, 22 Jul 2005.
- All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.
--DRolfe 23:38, 19 Jul 2005 (PDT)
- What's going on? Since the software reinstall the GFDL messages are gone. Is DKosopedia supposed to be GFDL? It used to always say that it was. I think it should be because that makes it ok to move material between DKosopedia and Wikipedia. Clyde 22:04, 6 April 2006 (PDT)
The only things that are in the public domain, and hence re-publishable here (that is, if not a labor of your own) are: generally, all works created before 1923, and all works originally published by the United States government (See also: Our article on copyright and this page about the Public Domain).
Anything else that is published here must then be an original creation of the submitter. Parody and derivative works may be covered by Fair Use. However, Fair Use is a defense, and as such, any content that is published here with the idea that it's "protected" by Fair Use is in fact infringing until such time as a Fair Use defense is adjudicated by a court (See also: this Fair Use overview and especially Fair Use for text). Normally, this is not a problem if you are careful about how much of a copyrighted source you quote or re-publish (as a percentage of the whole) and about citing your work so as to avoid the additional un-pleasantries of plagiarism. I bring this up, because I don't want to see Kos (or the other benefactors of this site) sued or subpoenaed for something you published (via "copy and paste"; as the Free Republic has been).
I guess this is another way of saying what is below each submission form on this site: You are [...] promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free [as in libre or unencumbered, cost is irrelevant] resource. DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION [i.e., a specific license from the copyright holder]!
Release license
What license are these works released under? I am querying this as there is a possible copyright violation here if the material is not released under a GFDL compatible license. All the discussion above seems to relate to what can be put into the site. I am wondering what can be taken out. Ansell 20:38, 7 May 2006 (PDT)
Error in boilerplate language
The text at the bottom of each edit page currently reads: "Please note that all contributions to dKosopedia are considered to be released under the All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (see Project:Copyrights for details)." The sentence has two different beginnings, each of which ends with the words "under the". Jim Lane 23:58, 9 May 2007 (PDT)
- Interesting. The license info at the bottom of each page is correct, however. This may be cleared up after the software upgrade. --Centerfielder 06:11, 10 May 2007 (PDT)
