Colleen Meyer, a member of the Republican Party, represents the 47th House district in the Hawaii State House of Representatives of the Hawaii State Legislature. The 47th district includes Ha'iku, Kahalu'u and La'ie areas on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii.
The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, a conservative think tank, released the 2008 scorecard for the Hawaii Legislature on Sept. 3, 2008. Representative Meyer tied with Representative Lynn Finnegan (R) as the highest scoring (48%) in the House of Representatives. Only four State Senators received scores above 50% from the study.
Representative Meyer has consistently been a low scoring legislator on the Sierra Club's Legislative Scorecard (see below).
Rep. Meyer also has a extremely unsympathetic voting record regarding gay issues. In 2001, she voted against the Hate Crimes bill that increased the penalties of criminal offenders who select their victims because of hostility to their sexual orientation. In 2003, she voted against add "gender identity or expression" to the state's hate crimes law. Hawaii's existing hate crimes law covers race, religion, disability, ethnicity, national origin and sexual orientation, providing authority to give longer sentences if a crime is committed because of hostility based on any of the covered characteristics. During the 2005 legislative session, Meyer voted against bills that would prohibit Hawaii's landlords and employers from discriminating against gays, lesbians or transsexuals. In 2007, Meyer voted against a bill that would extend health coverage to the unmarried partners of state and county workers who are part of the state health fund. [1]
Born and raised in Honolulu, Meyer is a graduate of Punahou. She is married and has two children.
