A special election will be held in the 48th Congressional District of California to choose a United States Representative to replace Chris Cox, who resigned effective August 2, 2005, to become Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. A primary election will be held in October while the general election will take place in December. If Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issues the proclamation for the special election before August 16, then the primary election will take place on October 11 with the general election on December 6. If he issues the proclamation on August 16, then the primary election will take place on October 18 with the general election on December 13.
Former California State Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer and State Senator John Campbell have announced their intentions to run for the seat. Former Congressman Bob Dornan is reportedly considering a run. Thus far, college professor John Graham is the only announced Democrat. Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist is running as a member of the American Independent Party.
