Bush is Out of Touch

Status

Not widely held, but could easily gain ground.

Origins

One of the most effective memes used against Bush's father, former president George H.W. Bush. Has found new life in Bush the Younger's proud admission that he doesn't read or watch the news, but rather gets all of his information "filtered" through his cabinet-level advisors (see Bush is Trapped in Ideology for a companion meme). Further inflamed by Bush's poor performance at press conferences, where he frequently looks confused and/or disinterested in the event. His adherence to the same (neo)conservative talking points in every appearance doesn't help, either. Finally, when confronted with a bad event, Bush frequently will put forth an air of "I didn't know about that". Some examples include his mispronunciation of "Abu Gharib" several times in a recent interview; his insistance in another that he was not familiar with Ahmed Chalabi, despite photographic evidence to the contrary; his similiar insistance that he was not familiar with Ken Lay when the Enron scandal broke, despite having dubbed Lay "Kenny Boy" in public.

Talking Points

"The president is not a fact checker."

"The president's advisors are the best source of information."

"The president's deep sense of morality means that his strong convictions can outweigh relevant facts"

Counterpoints

Sightings

Bush is Out of Touch With Americans (JohnKerry.com, Press Release, 23 January 2004)

Analysis

Really, the president is backed into a corner on this one. He's either out-of touch, stupid, a liar, or downright malicious.
