William "Bud" Stonebraker, a member of the Republican Party, represents the 17th representative district in the Hawaii State House of Representatives of the Hawaii State Legislature. The 17th district includes the Kalama Valley, Queen's Gate and Hawaii Kai areas of the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. He was first elected to office in 2000, an open race following the retirement of David Steigmeier. After running unopposed in 2002, he defeated Democratic challenger Rich Halverson in 2004 by a slim margin of around 700 votes. Stonebraker has retired from the legislature after the 2006 session.
William Stonebraker was born in Wahiawa on the island of Oahu on November 26, 1971. He was raised on the North Shore of Oahu and in Hawaii Kai and graduated Kaiser High School. Stonebraker is an assistant pastor at Calvary Chapel of Honolulu.
As a Hawaii state legislator, Stonebraker has a mediocre to poor environmental voting record and is an extremely unsympathetic when it comes to legislation affecting the gay population. During the 2005 legislative session, Stonebraker voted against bills that would prohibit Hawaii's landlords and employers from discriminating against gays, lesbians or transsexuals. Stonebraker has voted against any and every gay rights measure up for vote.
Democratic challengers to republican Rep. Stonebraker's seat in the 2004 elections were Richard Halverson and Paul Ah Yat.
