Categories: Kauai County, Hawaii | Hawaii Republicans
Bryan Baptiste, a member of the Republican Party, was elected Mayor of Kaua'i County in 2002 defeating Democrat Ronald Kouchi in the general election. Mayor Baptiste succeeded Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, a Republican, who reached the end of her two-term limit. Baptiste was reelected Mayor in 2006.
Prior to being elected Mayor, Baptiste was a Councilmember on the Kaua'i County Council for six years.
Baptiste is married and has four children.
Mayor Baptiste has not proven effective in office. The cynical viewpoint of one local activist was that if Council Chair Kouchi were elected much would get done but the top 20% would be raked off by his friends in business. However, if Councilman Baptiste were elected, the county would grind to a halt for 4 years. Unfortunatly this has proven to be the case. His chief of staff is already making noises of needing a job in 2 years.
Many in the Republican party are already searching for an alternative to replace Bryan. At this time no name has come forward although Councilman Mel Rapozo is rumored to be running as is Councilwoman and former Mayor Yukimura.
