Brilliant Pebbles was a Star Wars anti-ballistic missile program of the Reagan and first Bush administrations that was eliminated by the Clinton administration. Even the first Bush administration had begun to back away from the program once the Cold War souttred out with the political collapse of the Soviet Union. Growing out of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's Smart Rocks program of the 1980s, Brilliant Pebbles would have positioned some 4,000 satellite in low-Earth orbit (LEO) to attack long-range ballistic missiles using kinetic force when they entered space before their descent toward their targets. The satellite pebbles were envisioned as 300 pound masses.
