From dKosopedia
Brian Kanno, a Democrat, represents the 19th senatorial district in the Hawaii State Senate of the Hawaii State Legislature. The 19th district includes the Royal Kunia, Makakilo, Kapolei, Kalaeloa, Waipahu and Waikele areas of the island of Oahu. Kanno has been a member of the Hawaii State Senate since 1992.
David Shapiro wrote in his Volcanic Ash column on July 5, 2006:
- Sen. Brian Kanno left behind some parting gifts for his friends in the public worker unions before announcing his retirement from the Legislature.
- Late in this year's session, Kanno blocked Gov. Linda Lingle's nomination of attorney Paul Au to the Hawai'i Labor Relations Board, preventing the Republican governor from fully putting her imprint on the panel that settles disputes between the state and counties and their employees.
- Kanno also helped lead a second attempt by lawmakers to reverse a state Supreme Court ruling upholding state and county rights to transfer employees without negotiating with unions.
- The Leeward Democrat, who chaired the Labor Committee, was the unions' most reliable ally during his 14 years in the Senate. [1]
Prior to elected office, Kanno was a Youth Development specialist for Ewa Beach Boys & Girls Club. Kanno was a legislative aide to U.S. Representative Patsy Mink from 1990 to 1991.
Brian Kanno is a graduate of Waipahu High School and earned a BA degree in economics from Yale University.
Kanno is married and has two daughters.
