Republican Congressman representing Peoria, Illinois's congressional district for nearly 40 years. Michel served as House Minority Whip from 1975-1980, and then as House Minority Leader from 1980 to his retirement following the 1994 elections. Newt Gingrich succeeded Michel as House Republican Leader. Michel is a decorated veteran of World War II, winning two Bronze Star medals, a Purple Heart and four battle stars in Europe. Michel was famous in Congressional circles as the Republican pitcher in the annual Dems vs. GOP softball game. Bill Clinton awarded Michel the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994.

- Succeeded in his seat by his Chief of Staff, Ray LaHood, who actually remained on Michel's Congressional payroll during most of his campaign, and even as he later attended new Member orientation events as a Member-elect
