Billmon Comments

From dKosopedia

Billmon is the pseudonym of a left-wing political blogger who ran the website Whiskey Bar ("Free Thinking in a Dirty Glass"). He was an influential voice in the leftwing political blogosphere, and retired from blogging at the end of 2006, though in summer 2008 he began posting diaries on Daily Kos. Before he created that website, he was a commenter and guest poster on Daily Kos.

This page only contains information about Billmon's blog commenting on Daily Kos; for additional information on his writing see the main Billmon page.

Commenting on Daily Kos

Billmon's first comment on Daily Kos was on the day of the 2002 mid-term elections, Tuesday, November 5, 2002, responding to Markos's diary Early numbers; the comment thread link is here, and the comment was signed "billmon". He used that signature on all his comments, except when he'd mistype and leave off the final "n", leading to a joke about "evil billmo". Another person entirely used the similar signature "billm".

List of Comment Links

When billmon started commenting at Daily Kos, the blog was using Movable Type software. Markos was the sole blogger, and comment threads popped up in a separate window. The Movable Type site has subsequently been archived at DailyKos.net, and all links are to that archive.

In the archive, direct links can only be made to individual front-page posts, and to the comment threads of those posts. Only the entire thread can be linked to; there is no way to link to individual posts. So, once you bring up a comment thread in your browser, use the search function to find "billm". This will find all of billmon's comments, even the typoed ones, plus some direct references to those comments or questions to billmon.

In the list of comments below, the date given is the date the particular front-page post was made; it is possible that the actual comment was made the next day.

The person writing the original front page post is assumed to be Markos; if there was a guest blogger that day—Steve Soto, Steve Gilliard, or RonK, Seattle—that blogger will be named. Any open threads that Billmon may have created will be credited to him on this page; if uncredited, open threads are also assumed to be set up by Markos.

Note that comments attached to Billmon's own front-page posts are not listed on this page. Links to those comments will be found on the Billmon Posts page.

Important note: as of January 3, Billmon became a guest poster on the front page. All comments that Billmon wrote on his own posts can be found on the Billmon Posts page, listed with the original post. Also as of this date, he began signing his comments with a capitalized "Billmon" rather than "billmon" as he had previously done.

July 2003

Movable Type comments were shut down on July 1, 2003 at 5:01 p.m., and HaloScan comments were brought up in their place as a temporary measure on July 2, 2003 at 11:48 a.m. Unfortunately, due to problems setting up the first Daily Kos-owned server, Movable Type comments were not restored until August 16, 2003 at 9:44 a.m.; hence, any comments made by Billmon under HaloScan from July 2 through early morning on August 16 have been lost.

August 1–15: any comments made in this period have been lost

After August 15, 2003

Comments posted by Billmon after August 15 and until the Movable Type (archived) Daily Kos site was shut down on October 15, 2003, will be added as their links are retrieved from the archive. As this is a labor-intensive process, the task will take weeks or months to complete.

Link to Daily Kos comments on current site

Here is a link that will show you the approximately nine hundred comments billmon wrote on the current Daily Kos site (Scoop-based; opened October 13, 2003), 50 per search page. There are three comments from October 2003, then none until August 2005, another 74 at intervals through the end of 2006, ending right before he closed the Whiskey Bar for good. He wrote 104 comments through 2006, and began writing comments again when he wrote his first diary on the current site on July 31, 2008. He has written over nine hundred comments since then.
