Ben Shuldiner

Benjamin Shuldiner (D) is a New York high school principal who ran for United States Congress in the 19th congressional district, but he lost the primary to John Hall, see New York U.S. House election, 2006. Shuldiner is the youngest high school principal in New York. He founded the High School for Public Service in 2002 through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and at 29, was named one of the Best Public Servants in America under 35 in his receipt of the Jefferson Award. He attended Harvard University, graduating magna cum lauda with a degree in history and science.
Shuldiner was born with severe factor IX hemophilia and has lived with the bleeding condition throughout his life. He has worked to live a normal life and has been honored by the National Hemophilia Foundation for his achievements, culminating in his 2003 keynote address to the annual conference. Born in Crompond, NY, Shuldiner has lived in many parts of the country due to his father's work as an undersecretary of housing in the Bill Clinton administration.
Shuldiner received a Bachelor's degree in both History and Science at Harvard University and also took graduate level courses in teaching to receive his teaching credentials. While at Harvard, he co-founded Harvard's Progressive Student Labor Movement to rally for better wages and benefits for Harvard employee's. After graduating, he participated in AFL-CIO's Union Summer program, where he worked to organize day care workers in Chicago. He received his Master's Degree from Baruch College and first began teaching at Erasmus Hall High School.
Shuldiner was one of six Democratic candidates in the race to defeat incumbent Republican Sue Kelly. His campaign is a very grassroots organization. Shuldiner's main issue focus is on ending No Child Left Behind and creating a single payer national health care program. He also wants to convert Indian Point Energy Center to an alternative energy facility and bring the troops home from Iraq.
