Andy Welti (May 28, 1980, Rochester) is the elected moderate Minnesota state representative for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party representing Minnesota District 30B. Welti defeated powerful Republican incumbent Bill Kuisle in a major upset that shocked Republicans and Democrats around the state. Welti was first elected in 2004 and reelected in 2006 [1]. Welti is a high school social studies teacher in Rochester. [2]
His victory can only be attributed to his tireless grassroots campaign in which Welti himself knocked every door in his district twice, which, along with his phone calling and strong volunteer support, made for an intensely aggressive and personal campaign. What makes his victory all the more impressive is that he was only 24 years old and had no prior political experience. Welti is the youngest member of the state Legislature [3].
District 30B is largely rural, although it does include some parts of Rochester.
Welti is the Vice-Chair for the Agriculture, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee [4]
