British Prime Minister William Pitt resigns when he doesn't get his broader war with Spain. Pitt believed that a coalition between France and Spain would threaten Britain and proposed all out war against both countries until they were utterly defeated. George III did not agree. Pitt was replaced by John Stuart, Earl of Bute, George III's childhood tutor.
"John the Painter," future pro-American Revolutionary War saboteur, is boarded at George Heriot's Hospital in Edinburgh.

January: Colonel Eyre Coote took Pondicherry, French colony in India that had been besieged for 3 months; victory ended French domination of the South of India.
